I want to tell you about a problem that sounds almost embarrassingly small - and yet, if you have long or thick hair, I suspect you'll know exactly what I mean.
For years, I dreaded washing my hair.
Not the shower itself - I actually love a long, hot shower. It's one of my favourite parts of the day. The problem was everything that came after it. The heavy bath towel. The wrestling match to get hair wrapped up. The waiting. The frizz. The endless time under the blow dryer. By the time my hair was actually dry, I was exhausted, my arms ached, and my hair looked... fine. Not great. Just fine.
As a busy mum with long, thick hair, I'd find myself putting off wash day for as long as humanly possible - until my hair was genuinely overdue, looked like one big oily mess and I had no choice. It felt like a chore I had to psych myself up for. And every time, I'd think: surely there's a better way to do this.
Down the Rabbit Hole
Eventually, I decided to actually find out if there was a better way.
I started researching - I looked into different fabrics, different drying techniques, different towel designs.
And the more I learned, the more I realised that the humble bath towel (something most of us give absolutely no thought to) was at the centre of almost everything I was frustrated about.
The bath towel I'd been using my entire life was the problem. Its rough, heavy fibres were creating friction against my wet hair every single wash day, lifting the cuticle, causing frizz, contributing to breakage. It was heavy enough that wrapping it tightly was the only way to keep it in place - putting tension on my roots and strands. And because it wasn't designed for hair, it wasn't particularly efficient at absorbing moisture either, which meant longer drying times and more time under heat.
Why Existing Options Weren't Good Enough
At this point I went looking for a solution - and found that the hair towel market, while growing, had a problem of its own.
Most hair towels on the market are made from standard microfibre. It's cheap to produce, widely available, and technically more absorbent than a cotton bath towel. But standard microfibre is the same fabric used in car cleaning cloths and kitchen wipes. It's a commodity material, and while it is better than a bath towel, it is not designed with hair in mind. It still creates more friction than hair needs. It still feels rougher than it should. It gets the job done, but it doesn't do the job well.
I wanted something genuinely different. Something that treated hair the way it deserved to be treated - with softness, care, and real intention.
So instead of settling, I started developing my own.
The Fabric That Changed Everything
The breakthrough came when I started looking into polyamide - a fibre more commonly known as nylon - and what happens when you blend it with polyester in the right ratio.
Polyamide fibres are exceptionally fine and soft. When blended into a fabric, they transform its texture completely - creating something that feels noticeably different to standard microfibre, almost silky against your fingers. More importantly for hair, the finer fibres create dramatically less friction against the hair cuticle. Instead of roughing up already-fragile wet strands, the fabric glides over them while still drawing moisture away efficiently.
After testing and refining, I landed on a blend of 82% polyester and 18% polyamide. This ratio gives the fabric the perfect balance of absorbency, softness, and lightweight comfort. It absorbs moisture quickly enough to meaningfully reduce drying time, while being gentle enough that it doesn't disturb the cuticle in the process.
It's the detail I'm most proud of in the whole product. It's also the detail that most customers notice immediately - that first time they wrap it around their hair and feel how different it is.
I tested multiple fabrics, purchasing many samples (from rolls to tiny swatches), but when nothing even came close to what I wanted I worked on developing my own fabric blend, combining two different fibres to create Junie's signature dual-fibre blend! It then took 4 rounds of samples to get the product just how I wanted it - soft fabric, great absorbency, luxurious feel and looking good!
What Junie Is Really About
The Junie Quick-Dry Hair Towel is the hero product. But Junie, to me, has always been about something bigger.
It's about the idea that the small, everyday rituals of our lives deserve to be done properly - and that "properly" doesn't mean complicated or expensive. It means thoughtful. It means designed with real care for the person using it, not just for cost efficiency or shelf appeal.
Wash day is something most of us do one, two, maybe three times a week for our entire lives. That's hundreds and hundreds of wash days. If even a small improvement to that routine makes each one a little easier, a little more enjoyable, a little kinder to your hair - that adds up to something meaningful over time.
I started Junie because I was tired of dreading something that should feel effortless. Now, on the other side of it, wash day is genuinely one of my favourite parts of the week. A little act of self-care. A few quiet minutes for just me.
That's what I want for every person who uses a Junie Hair Towel. Because hair care shouldn't feel like a chore!
